October 21, 1936— March 9, 2026
Houston, TX
Yong James Kang passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 21, 1936, in Korea, he was the fourth of six children born to Jae Ho Kang and Jung Soon Park. He graduated from Yonsei University with a degree in economics, served in the military, and later immigrated to the United States. He earned a Master’s degree in Economics from Brigham Young University.
On August 22, 1965, Yong married Susan Kang (née Kwak) in Norton, Kansas. They shared 60 years of marriage built on family, hard work, and quiet dedication. He spent much of their life together in Arvada, Colorado, where he worked as a computer programmer and systems analyst, first with the Adolph Coors Company and later with the Bell Company, retiring in 1996. In retirement, he returned to Seoul as a consultant for Hyundai before settling in Antioch, California, and finally Houston, Texas, in 2017.
Yong is survived by his devoted wife, Susan; his three children, Debby, Tammy (Jeff), and Michael (Soo Hyun); and his eight beloved grandchildren: Alison, Kendall, and Morgan Gentzen; Nathan and Sebastian Kralik; and Emily, Ethan, and Elliott Kang. He found joy in mountain trips, fishing, skiing, golf, and early investing, founding the East West Mutual investment club with close friends. Above all, he cherished watching his grandchildren grow.
He will be remembered for his steadfast dedication to family, his strong work ethic, and the quiet, lasting influence he had on all who knew him.
