Evanston, WY

Wyman “Kay” Ovard, 79, of Evanston, Wyoming, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2026. A skilled lead mechanic for more than thirty years, Kay earned the respect of many for his ability to repair nearly anything. Later in life he found his true calling working at The American Cowboy, where he shared his deep love of western tack and clothing with others who cherished the same way of life.

At heart, Kay was an authentic American cowboy. An accomplished horseman, hunter, and fisherman, he spent countless hours in the mountains and on the trails he loved. He taught his children to fish and shared many special days with them on mountains and at lakes. With the help of kind neighbors, he built his first home with his own hands, a reflection of his self-reliance and determination. In the kitchen he was known for his sourdough pancakes, prepared with the same quiet care he brought to everything he did for those he loved. A gifted dancer, he taught his children to two-step to western music, especially the songs of Ian Tyson, creating memories that still bring smiles.

Kay served his country for five years in the Army National Reserves, carrying the same steady dedication into every part of his life. Above all, he was his children’s quietest yet most steadfast cheerleader, supporting their dreams without fanfare. He showed his love through action—cooking a meal, offering a hand, or simply being present—and remained a loyal friend to many.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Lisa Ovard; his children, Shawna Ovard, Cynthia Ovard, Kaylyn (Jared) Ovard-Smith, and Riley Ovard; his grandchildren, Tia Smith and Zane Ovard; his sister, Sharon (Reed) Williams; and his brother, Scott (Claudia) Ovard, along with many sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Wyman; his mother, Elizabeth; and his first wife, Linda Yardley.
