Wilma Ruth Thornton, age 82 of Englewood passed away Monday, March 9, 2026 at UT Medical Center.
A native and life-long resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Neil and Emmaline Wattenbarger Monroe and was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert "Larry" Thornton an infant son, Larry Neil Thornton and her siblings, Jewell Monroe, Pauline Carpenter, Samuel Monroe, Nathemia Farris and Melvin Monroe.
She was of the Baptist faith and was a former employee of Thomas and Betts having retired after 30 years of service.
Survivors:
Two sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Darlene Thornton of Englewood
Darrell and Sandra Thornton of Athens;
One daughter, Angel Gable of Decatur;
Five grandchildren, Nathan Thornton, Eric Thornton, Paige Gable, Wyatt Gable and Alexis Thornton;
Two great-grandchildren, Aiden Thornton and Alistair Thornton;
Several nieces and nephews
Funeral services will be 6:00 PM Sunday, March 15, 2026 in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with Pastor Brandon Wilcox and Glen Standridge officiating. Graveside services will be 2:00 PM Monday, March 16, 2026 at Pond Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Scott Thornton, Darrell Thornton, Nathan Thornton, Eric Thornton, Wyatt Gable, Aiden Thornton and Alistair Thornton. The family will receive friends from 3-6 PM Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.
