Odessa, TX
Willie James Kates Sr., lovingly known as “Red,” was born on August 1, 1929, in Tom, Oklahoma, to James Rainey Kates and Dolly Powell. He passed from this life on March 6, 2026, in Odessa, Texas. A man of quiet strength and steady hands, Red lived a life defined by hard work, devotion to family, and a remarkable talent for fixing and building nearly anything.
He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, enlisting on December 11, 1952, and rising to the rank of Airman First Class. While on active duty, he met the love of his life, Charlene Taylor, and they married on December 21, 1953. Their enduring partnership became the heart of a family legacy that continues today.
A skilled mechanic both during and after his military service, Red was admired for his strong work ethic and his ability to repair cars, improve his home, and create whatever was needed. He found deep satisfaction in fishing, gardening and growing fresh vegetables, riding bicycles with his grandchildren, and sharing quiet, meaningful moments with family and friends. He remained active, generous, and always ready to lend a helping hand to those he loved.
Red was preceded in death by his parents, James Rainey Kates and Dolly Powell; many brothers and sisters; his daughters, Rachel Sheridan and Barbara Kates; his son-in-law, William Sheridan; and his great-granddaughter, Alexis Venegas. He is survived by his son, Willie James Kates Jr., and daughter-in-law, Darlene Kates; his granddaughters, Amanda Kates and her husband Daniel Montano, along with their children Caden, Ellie, and Kensley Montano; Barbara Venegas and her husband Angel Venegas, along with their sons Jordan and Jacob Venegas; Attie Montgomery, Sarah Meek, and grandson Jadon Montgomery; as well as grandsons Michial Sheridan and Rocky Sheridan. He will be remembered for his strength, his craftsmanship, his love of the outdoors, and above all, his deep and abiding love for his family.
