Gastonia, NC

William Glenn Atchley, known affectionately as Glenn, was born on July 24, 1946, in Gaston County, North Carolina, and passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, at the Robin Johnson Hospice House, surrounded by his family and friends. His life was marked by unwavering dedication to his family and community, leaving behind a legacy of love and service that will be fondly remembered.

Glenn enjoyed a long and distinguished career as an engineer, rising to the position of Vice-President at Gibson Machine Shop after more than 50 years of service. His commitment to his work was matched by his genuine desire to help others succeed. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and later as a member of the Gaston County Honor Guard. Glenn was an accomplished gardener, an avid fisherman, and a skilled woodworker who took great pleasure in crafting items and giving them to others. A lifelong member of Legacy Church, he later attended Victory Hill Baptist Church after the passing of his wife.

Above all, Glenn was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His greatest joy was his family, who remained the center of his world. He is survived by his daughters, Apryl Smith (Thomas) and Melissa White (Jason); his grandchildren, Allyson Smith, Caroline Smith, and Zetta White; and his sisters, Carol Robinson, Wanda Willis (Jim), and Hilda McCraw (Weldon). He also leaves behind his dear lifelong friends, Mike and Donna Nichols.

Glenn was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Norma Cobb Atchley, and by his parents, Raleigh and Maude Hardin Atchley.
