William "Bill" Gilbert, 78, of Radcliff, passed away Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, at the Carl M. Brashear Radcliff Veterans Center.Mr. Gilbert was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Gilbert continued to serve his community through his work as a civil engineer at the University of Kentucky until his retirement in 2014. One of Mr. Gilbert's most notable professional achievements was the development of a pivotal software program alongside Dr. Don J. Wood. This software revolutionized the distribution of water to county residents across several county governments.Outside of his professional life, Bill was an enthusiastic golfer, finding joy and camaraderie on the green. Furthermore, as a proud Honor Flight Kentucky veteran, he carried with him the pride of those who served, cherishing the opportunity to connect with fellow servicemen and women through this honorable program. Bill Gilbert also was a committed mason, upholding the values of brotherhood, truth and charity.He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Thelma Gilbert; and three siblings, Jerry Gilbert, Jeanie Riddle and Lynne Sims.Survivors include three siblings, David E. Gilbert, Patricia Sharkey and Barbara Skees (Norbert); and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.Visitation is from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, March 9, in the chapel of Chism Family Funeral Home in Vine Grove..The funeral for Mr. Gilbert is at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. A committal service with military honors follows in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-Central in Radcliff.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Carl M. Brashear Radcliff Veterans Center.
