Wanda Wirtz ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Rude's Funeral Home on Mar. 9, 2026.Wanda Fay Wirtz, 78, of Brookings, South Dakota, passed away Saturday, March 7th, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Rude's Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements. Private family services will be held at a later date.Wanda Fay Bartels was born May 17, 1947, in Onida, South Dakota, to Ray and Lois Bartels. She grew up in Onida and graduated from Onida High School in 1965.She attended South Dakota State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1969. While at SDSU, she met John Wirtz. They married in 1969 and made their home in Brookings.Wanda spent most of her career at South Dakota State University. She began in the Chemistry Department assisting with laboratory instruction and later worked in the College of Engineering managing a laboratory, where she supported many graduate students as they completed their studies.Wanda was an avid reader who enjoyed playing cards, especially with her longtime pinochle club. She treasured family gatherings, games, and time with loved ones. She also volunteered for many years with Feeding Brookings, helping support neighbors in the community.Wanda is survived by her husband, John Wirtz; her children, Steve Wirtz (Ruth Anway) and Paula Wirtz; and her brother, Hugh Bartels.She will be remembered for her kindness, quiet dedication, and the care she showed to her family, students, and community.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
