Walter Leoan “Leon” Lawrence was born on July 26, 1951, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, to Willie Lee Lawrence and Gloria Smith Lawrence. Raised in a close-knit family grounded in faith and community, Leon grew up as a member of Cleaves Memorial C.M.E. Church. A standout athlete at Okmulgee High School, he graduated in 1970 after excelling in basketball and football, earning All-State honors in basketball and helping lead his team to multiple championships. He also served his community as a lifeguard at the local pool. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma, graduating on May 12, 1976. While there, he became a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He later served three years in the Army National Guard, receiving an honorable discharge.

Leon built a respected career at General Motors, where he worked for more than 30 years, known for his strong work ethic and dedication. A lifelong lover of music and a man of deep faith, he remained active in Greater Cleaves Church after moving to Midwest City. For more than 20 years, he devoted himself to the GloryBound Gospel Hour, honoring his mother’s memory and carrying forward a legacy of praise. He shared more than 20 years with his devoted soulmate, Joyce Pearson, who remained lovingly by his side until his final moments.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Lee Lawrence and Gloria Lawrence Johnson, and his beloved daughter, Marilyn Renee Lawrence. He is survived by his children, Walter Leoan Lawrence Jr. (Arsema), Joseph Lawrence, Shaun Michael Lawrence, Donnell Smith (Ryan), and Lonnell Smith (Sofia), as well as his partner Joyce Pearson. He also leaves behind his siblings, Linda Morgan, Kenneth Lawrence (Debra), Barbarbra Cooks (Dennis), and Jerry Lawrence (Janet), along with 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of relatives and friends who will cherish his memory.

Leon’s life was defined by faith, music, family, and quiet perseverance. The love he gave and the example he set will continue to live on in all those whose lives he touched.
