March 8, 1946— March 5, 2026
New Iberia, LA
Wallace John Gathe, Sr., 79, of Coteau, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Acadiana’s Calcutta House on Thursday, March 5, 2026, just three days before his 80th birthday. Born in Lafayette, Louisiana on March 8, 1946, to the late Kerry and Adonia Patin Gathe, Wallace demonstrated a strong work ethic from an early age. He left high school to work as a golf caddy and later built a career in maintenance and as an equipment operator at Iberia Co-Op until the sugar mill closed. He then worked maintaining generators for Aggreko until his retirement.
Wallace found joy in playing bingo and cards, watching sports, fishing, small game hunting, and his beloved Red Seal dip. He shared 41 years of marriage with his wife, Vergie Lopez Gathe, and cherished time with his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Kellie Landry; sons, Wallace Gathe, Jr. and Jason Gathe; grandchildren, Hunter Gathe, Kaleb Gathe, Alivia Gathe, and Catherine Gathe; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vergie Lopez Gathe; infant daughter, Jennifer Gathe; and sisters, Mary Leona Gathe, Annie Lou Hebert, and Pearlie Mae Begnaud.
Wallace leaves behind a world more colorful than he found it. He will remain in the hearts of those who loved him forever.
