Wallace Murphree, II ObituaryPublished by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 9, 2026.On June 25, 1938, Wallace Allgood Murphree, II, was born to (Rev.) Hobart andWinnie Murphree, in the parsonage of the Wedowee First MethodistChurch. Soon after his birth, the parsonage was torn down and the churchbuilding that had been standing next to the parsonage was rolled on logs andpulled by mules to the current site of the Church.Wallace lived in and around Wedowee, AL until he joined the Army and then wenton to complete his education, culminating in a doctoral degree in Philosophy fromVanderbilt University. He married Martha Kirby, from Rock Stand in 1961 and theymoved to Starkville, MS where Wallace spent his working years as a professor atMississippi State University. When he retired in 2000, they returned to RandolphCounty, AL and built a log cabin in the woods on his parents home place, where helived until his death on March 3, 2026.Wallace loved to sing and could play all types of musical instruments. He regularlyparticipated in several Pickin' houses, was a member of the Church Choir, andpresented original music and songs in the annual Randolph County ArtsAssociation Over the Hill Review presentation. He wrote poetry, music and songsas a hobby and also was the author of two books and numerous articles.Wallace loved everyone and was deeply loved by all who knew him. He did muchvolunteer work, provided transportation for those who needed it, and helpedanyone in need. His life made Randolph County a better place and he will bedeeply missed.He is survived by: his son, Scott Murphree, his daughter, Kate Murphree Baumann,his grandchildren, Garrett Baumann, Jackson Baumann, Danielle Murphree Evans,Rachel Murphree, and Will Murphree, his sister, Sarah Murphree Corson (andfamily), his brothers, Rev. Jon Tal Murphree (and family), and Dr. Quincy Murphree(and family) and is preceded in death by his wife, Martha Kirby Murphree and hisbrother Phillip Murphree.Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 13, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church of Wedowee.Online condolences may be expressed at www.benefieldfhwedowee.com.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
