February 11, 1982— March 8, 2026
Durham, NC
Virginia Kathleen Coe, MSN, NP-C, PCCN, 44, of North Carolina, died at home on March 8, 2026. Born on February 11, 1982, in San Jose, California, to Margaret “Maggie” Coe, Virginia grew up across California in San Pedro and Yucca Valley before her family settled in North Carolina. She is survived by her mother, Maggie Coe; her sister, Margaret “Marcy” Coe Edenfield and husband Matthew Edenfield; her brother, William “Billy” Bernard Coe; her beloved nieces, Mo and Morgan Edenfield; her aunt Bernadette Weingarten; and her devoted dog, Penny. She was preceded in death by her uncle, Gary Weingarten, and her maternal grandparents, Bernard and Angela Coe, along with many other dear family members.
Virginia shared a deep and joyful connection with her large extended family spread across the country. She was everyone’s favorite person—kind, funny, loyal, and brilliantly sharp. Her childhood was filled with summers at her grandparents’ home on Roberts Avenue, where she and her siblings played among cousins, aunts, and uncles, enjoying tractor rides, tree climbing, and carefree days. Family travels in the RV took them on cross-country adventures and simple ocean picnics; by her teenage years, she had visited 48 states. She possessed an incredible imagination, never met a stranger, and embraced every new adventure with open arms.
A graduate of Millbrook High School in 2000, Virginia earned an Associate’s degree in Nursing from Wake Technical Community College. She began her career with Duke Health in cardiothoracic surgery and, while working full time, completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Nursing Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2019. She advanced to the role of Nurse Practitioner in cardiothoracic surgical stepdown, helping to open the Duke Medical Pavilion. Inspired by her grandmother Angela, who had been a nurse during World War II and later in the emergency department, Virginia spent twenty years at Duke Health, touching countless lives through her compassionate care and forming lasting friendships with colleagues. When she was hospitalized, former coworkers visited her, and upon her discharge, staff lined the hallway in a touching Walk of Honor.
Affectionately known as “Auntie Gigi,” Virginia was a devoted and cherished aunt to her nieces Mo and Morgan. Their special tradition of “reposes”—simple outings for ice cream, boba, or coffee followed by heartfelt conversations—created treasured memories. She shared an especially close bond with her aunt Bernadette, her kindred spirit and constant companion, who remained by her side until the end. Cousins Angela Weingarten and Jessica Vargas also provided loving support during her final days. Virginia’s family is grateful for the precious time they shared with her at home in her last weeks. They find comfort knowing she is at peace, no longer suffering, and watching over them with love. She will be remembered for her grace, kindness, and the light she brought into the lives of all who knew her.
