March 15, 1945— March 1, 2026
Peoria, AZ
Virgil Wayne Roberts, affectionately known as “the Sturge” to many and “Old Man” to his closest family, passed peacefully on March 1, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on March 15, 1945, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Vertis George Roberts and Emma Pauline Roberts, Virgil grew up with a natural talent for all things mechanical. He spent much of his early life racing cars and honing his skills as a gifted mechanic, an expertise that defined him for decades. To countless people he was simply “THE MECHANIC,” the one they called when in need. No matter how ill he felt or what else was on his schedule, Virgil would drop everything to lend a hand. Even in his final days, the mention of faulty brakes was enough to stir his unwavering spirit, though his weakening body would not allow him to rise.
A hardworking and selfless man, Virgil found his greatest joy in serving others and sharing his knowledge. His deep faith in Jesus sustained him throughout his life, and he looked forward eagerly to an eternity at home with his Savior.
He is survived by his brothers Vertis, Ronald, Greg, and Rick; his sister Sharon; his daughters Kathy (Joe) and Stephanie (Richard); his grandchildren Carl (Jennifer), Brooke, and Danielle (Jeff); and his great-grandchildren Serenity, Johnathan, Jeremiah, Melania, Dallas, Victoria, Layla, and Aaliya. He was also dearly loved by his beloved dog, Angel. Virgil was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Irene; their sweet little daughter, Ginger; his parents, Vertis and Pauline; and his brothers Dennis and Mike.
Those who knew him will long remember his generosity, his mechanical gifts, and his steadfast faith. The family finds profound comfort in knowing Virgil is now resting in the loving arms of Jesus, just as he always envisioned.
