Valerie Trewhella

Valerie Trewhella, of Moodus, passed away on March 11, 2026, at the age of 59. Born in Queens, New York, on February 11, 1967, to Thomas and Maureen Brennan, she grew up in East Islip, New York. She later relocated to Colchester with her late husband Karl to raise their family.

Valerie began her career in the computer field before choosing to stay home with her children when they were young. Once they started school, she worked in the school system so she could remain close to them. Throughout her life she found purpose in caregiving, offering her time and compassion both as a vocation and as a genuine calling. She also extended that same kindness to animals in need.

She cherished simple pleasures such as the scent of freshly cut flowers and Christmas trees, the warm glow of candles, the sight of snowmen in winter, and especially the sun, blue Caribbean waters, and the familiar smell of suntan lotion during beach trips. Above all, Valerie treasured spending time with her family and friends and caring for her children.

She is lovingly remembered by her children, Thomas Dunbar, Scott Dunbar, Katelyn Dunbar and Chad Dottor; her father, Thomas; her companion, Bill Sawchuk; and many extended family members and friends. She was predeceased by her mother, Maureen, and her brother, Thomas.
