David Anthony McKenzie, known affectionately as Ty or Tony, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026, at the age of 58. Born on February 6, 1968, in Blanco, New Mexico, he was the cherished son of the late David and Ramona McKenzie.
Ty grew up in a loving family and is survived by his sisters, Karen Tapia and Sharon Rodriguez, and his brothers, Donovan McKenzie and Jonithan McKenzie. He shared a deep and loving partnership with his beloved Bon McKenzie, building a life together filled with companionship and warmth that will remain in her heart.
After earning his GED in 1986, Ty attended Dixie College in St. George, Utah, where he studied Culinary Arts. He worked as a server in restaurants, bringing joy to those he served, and later owned Big Burgers at the Shiprock Flea Market. He also served as a substitute teacher in Shiprock elementary schools, where his kindness and wisdom touched young lives. A talented silversmith, he created beautiful sterling silver and turquoise jewelry. Ty was an avid DIY enthusiast and thrifter who loved to cook for family and friends. Respectful, friendly, intelligent, and compassionate, he was well known throughout the Shiprock community for his helpful nature and willingness to stop for a chat.
Ty will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. He leaves behind a legacy of love, creativity, and kindness that will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
