Tonnie van den Brink
West Hartford, CT
Tonnie van den Brink passed away peacefully in her sleep after a short illness at the age of 86. Born in Borne, Netherlands, during the Second World War, she grew up in an occupied country and witnessed the hardships of war at a very young age. These early experiences shaped her deep compassion for others and inspired an early desire to help people.
Life took her in a different direction when she met the man who would become her husband. After their marriage, she moved with him to Central America, embracing the dramatic change in language, culture, and surroundings with enthusiasm and determination. She immersed herself in language studies and quickly came to love the rhythm, people, and customs of her new home. Over the years she would relocate twice more, first to Switzerland and later to the United States, approaching each new chapter with the same resilience and openness. America became her final home.
A passionate traveler and lifelong learner, Tonnie spoke five languages fluently and took genuine delight in experiencing different cultures and connecting with others. Her warmth, sincerity, joy, grace, kindness, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
She is survived by her son Hans and daughter-in-law Sheri of Georgia, her daughter Elisabeth and son-in-law Nigel of Connecticut, her granddaughters Bailea (husband Matthew) of New York and Alexandra of Connecticut, and her great-granddaughters Kylie and Skylar. Her passing leaves a deep void in the lives of those who knew and loved her, yet her legacy of compassion, resilience, and love for people and cultures will continue through all the lives she touched.
