Timothy McGauley ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Maxwell P. Dunne Funeral Service - Yorktown Blvd. on Mar. 8, 2026.Timothy Jerome McGauley passed away on March 8, 2026, in Corpus Christi, Texas, at the age of 82. He was born on November 7, 1943, in Superior, Wisconsin, on the shores of Lake Superior. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerome Stephen McGauley and Mildred Ann McGauley (Cronemiller); his brother Gerald McGauley ("Snork"); and his nephew Scott Alan McGauley. He is survived by his niece Elizabeth (Beth) McGauley and his nephews Michael McGauley and Daniel McGauley.Tim grew up in the "Twin Ports" of Superior, Wisconsin and Duluth, Minnesota, an area shaped by shipping, steel, and the industries of the Great Lakes. Reflecting on those early years, he later wrote about his childhood with characteristic humor and vivid detail, recalling winter sledding, frozen creeks, and the long northern winters that shaped his independence and curiosity.A lifelong lover of science, Tim pursued chemistry and ultimately earned a master's degree in the field. Early in his career he worked at Rocketdyne, a division of North American Aviation, during the height of the Apollo program. Rocketdyne was responsible for producing the engines that powered the Saturn rockets, including the J-2 rocket engine used in the upper stages of the Saturn V that carried astronauts to the Moon. His work placed him at the heart of one of humanity's greatest technological achievements-the effort to send people to the Moon.Later in his career, Tim devoted decades of work to improving public safety. Through his work with Union Carbide and later at Pine Bluff Arsenal in Arkansas, he contributed to the safe dismantling and disposal of chemical weapons. His efforts were widely recognized and he received numerous awards for his work helping make the world a safer place.Tim's life, however, was never limited to laboratories and technical work. He possessed a deep sense of adventure and independence. In the early 1970s he shipped his Toyota Land Cruiser across the Atlantic on a cargo ship bound for South Africa and began exploring the African continent on his own terms. He would ultimately undertake three solo safaris across Africa, driving thousands of miles through remote landscapes and national parks. His travels reflected a fascination with wildlife, geology, and cultures around the world. He documented many of these experiences in detailed personal writings intended for future generations of his family. He also had a lifelong love of animals and nature, which shaped many of his adventures and travels.Later in life Tim turned to the sea. As the owner of his yacht, Penchant, he continued his independent spirit of exploration, spending years navigating coastal waters and pursuing new adventures on the ocean. Those who knew Tim remember him as intelligent, quirky, humorous, and remarkably generous. He possessed a unique perspective on the world and often approached life with both curiosity and dry wit. He loved storytelling, scientific inquiry, and sharing what he had learned through his many travels and experiences. In his own words, written as a message to future generations of his family:"I… relate to you some threads of my existence as it relates to life in the latter half of the twentieth century… in prose that, I hope, will hold your interest."Through science, adventure, travel, and storytelling, Timothy Jerome McGauley lived a life defined by curiosity, independence, and exploration. He will be deeply missed by his family and by all who had the opportunity to know him and hear his stories. If EVENTS are posted below, floral tributes may be ordered for those services, otherwise, floral tributes will automatically be delivered to the primary family address on file.
