Thomas J. Rice, age79, passed away peacefully at home on March 5,2026, surrounded by his family. Tom was born on November 21,1946 in Iowa City, Iowa to James and Margaret Rice. He grew up in Riverside, Iowa where he developed a lifelong love for the outdoors and nature. Tom attended the University of Iowa, studying Computer Science. His career brought him to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he began working for Control Data. On April 11,2015, Tom married Mary Becker. Residing in rural Jordan, Minnesota, they together shared a love of nature, adventure, and community. Tom's true passion was the outdoors. He was happiest when hiking, biking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, trail clearing or exploring prairies and natural landscapes. Being active in nature brought him joy throughout his life. He was a long-time member of the North Star Ski Touring Club and Minnesota Public Radio. Tom was also a dedicated volunteer, giving his time to organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Ney Nature Center, and Minnesota Master Naturalist. Those who knew Tom will remember him as humble, quiet, adventurous, and generous -someone who deeply valued nature and an active life outdoors. Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Becker; and his siblings, Linda and Denny Oeth of Oak Harbor, Washington; Rich and Sharen of Columbus, Ohio; Larry Rice and Beth Broman of Riverside, Iowa; Kathy and Gary Hahn of Aurora, Colorado; Betty and Mike Lord of Riverside, Iowa; Jan and Tom Stout of Solon, Iowa, many nieces and nephews, and Mary's family. Mary, the Rice family and the Becker family extend special gratitude to Ridgeview Hospice and all who supported Tom with care and compassion. A celebration of Tom's life is planned for Sunday April 12, 2026, at 2:00 PM in the Snyder Auditorium at The University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, 3675 Arboretum Dr., Chaska, MN 55318. Admission at front gate is complimentary for guests by informing gatekeeper of the Celebration of Life for Tom Rice.
