Thomas Fitzgerald Edmunds, Jr., 87, of McKenney, Virginia, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on August 18, 1938, in McKenney to the late Thomas and Lucy (McIlwaine) Edmunds, Tom married his middle school sweetheart, Cecelia (Cece) Powers, at the age of 18. The couple shared nearly seventy years of devoted marriage. Together they raised five children: Thomas “Tommy” Fitzgerald Edmunds, III (Susan), Anne Hardy Edmunds Liptak (John), William “Bill” McIlwaine Edmunds (Cindy), Cecelia Lynn Edmunds Holden (Mark), and John Powers Edmunds (Michelle). Tom was blessed with eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
A dedicated and hardworking family man, Tom served in the Marine Corps before pursuing a variety of careers, including policeman, Federal Reserve employee, and insurance salesman. He later returned with his family to the family farm, “Hillcrest,” in McKenney, to help operate the dairy. In his later working years, he fulfilled a longtime dream by owning and operating Edmunds Trucking. After retirement, he continued to work alongside his son John at Hillcrest Transportation.
A lifelong member of Concord Presbyterian Church in Rawlings, Virginia, Tom served as an Elder and Superintendent of Sunday School. He was known for his warmth and genuine interest in others, never meeting a stranger and readily engaging in conversation on topics close to his heart, especially farming, cars, and politics. Above all, he cherished his family, his church, and his community, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and love that continues to bless those who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Mary Plummer Humphrey, Lucy Ann Traynham, and Jane Powers.
