Thomas Edward McConnell, 89, of Cumberland, passed away on March 14, 2026, at UPMC Western Maryland. Born in Cumberland on October 15, 1936, he was the son of the late Anthony Edward and Mildred Pauline (Coughenour) McConnell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Shawn Whalen.
A 1955 graduate of Fort Hill High School, Tom enlisted in the Army after graduation and served with the 82nd Airborne Division until 1958. He later worked at Kelly Springfield Tires before serving and retiring as bailiff for District Court Judge Paul J. Stakem. A longtime member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, his life centered on the Knights of Columbus Council #586, where he served as Past Grand Knight, and the Alhambra Wamba Caravan 89, where he served as Past Grand Commander.
Tom is survived by his wife of many years, Charlene (Sibley) McConnell; his children, Cynthia (McConnell) Whalen and Mark McConnell and his wife Dawn; his grandchildren, Matthew Kirby and his wife Ashton, Michael Kirby and his fiancée Krissa Tellef, Madigan and Kellen McConnell, and Aiden and Riley Williams; his great-grandson, Gunnar Kirby; his sister, Maryann (McConnell) Lippert and her husband Tom; his brother-in-law, Charles Sibley, Jr. and his significant other Dixie Pownall; and his nieces and nephews, Kim Bolinger and her husband Andrew, Marcy Aufderheide and her husband Greg, Greg Lippert, and Brian Lippert and his wife Kirsten.
A graveside service will be held at a later date in accordance with Tom’s wishes.
