January 3, 1941 March 11, 2026

Clairton, PA

Thomas Ayler Simms, III, affectionately known as “Shorty,” passed away on March 11, 2026, at the VA Hospital, Heinz Campus in Pittsburgh, surrounded by his family. He was 85 years old and a lifelong resident of Clairton. The son of the late Thomas Ayler Simms, Jr. and Helen Margaret Pollock Simms, he was a proud United States Navy veteran who served four years aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea during the Vietnam era. After his military service, he dedicated twenty years to the Clairton Police Department, retiring as a respected officer who continued to embody a spirit of service and protection throughout his life.

Tom was a lifelong enthusiast of cars and motorcycles, regularly attending shows and sharing his passion with others. He was a longtime member of the Clairton VFW Post 803 and the Clairton American Legion Post 75. Above all, he cherished his family and friends, living life fully and without regret. Known for his quick wit, unique sense of humor, and gift as a storyteller, he brought warmth and laughter to every gathering, especially those centered around a shared meal.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Lou Houy of Wilson; his son, Thomas Ayler Simms, IV of Wilson; his daughter, Avis (David) Oberdan of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; grandchildren Nichele (Greg) Canavan of Duluth, Minnesota, Ashley Puentes of Washington State, and Devon (Victoria) Oberdan of Tucson, Arizona; great-grandchildren Gage Canavan of Duluth, Minnesota, and Chase Birindelli of Washington State, along with a great-granddaughter expected in July; his loving companion of eight years, Norma Jean Napiecek of Wilson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his niece, Melodie Andrisko.

Tom will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, yet he will forever remain in their hearts through the countless memories he so generously shared.
