Zionsville, IN
Theodore “Ted” Wilson Sushka of Zionsville, Indiana, passed into the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 7, 2026, at the age of 83.
Born on August 28, 1942, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, to Theodore Louis and Elizabeth Scotka Sushka, Ted graduated from Martins Ferry High School in 1960. He attended Tri-State College, now Trine University, in Indiana, where he studied civil engineering and later received an honorary degree in 2011 in recognition of his professional accomplishments.
Ted began his career with the Ohio Department of Transportation in District 11 in New Philadelphia. After passing his Professional Engineer’s examination in 1967, he completed the state’s Engineer-in-Training program and transferred to ODOT’s District 10 office in Marietta. There he earned his Professional Engineer’s license in 1970 and his Professional Surveyor’s license in 1973. In February 1970 he met Barbara Farnsworth in Wheeling, West Virginia. They married on July 5, 1970, in Wellsburg, West Virginia, and together raised four children: Lori Ware, Lou Sushka, Bobbi Sushka, and their son Steven, born in 1973.
A dedicated public servant, Ted served as a Traffic Engineer with ODOT while also operating his own property surveying business. In 1992 he was elected Washington County Engineer, serving from 1993 until his retirement in 2000. Among his most notable achievements were the signalized intersection of SR 60 and 821 and the replacement of the historic Putnam Street Bridge. His surveying work left a lasting mark across Devola, Marietta, and surrounding communities. A man of deep faith, Ted was a committed husband and father who supported missionaries and those in need. He was known for his tireless work ethic, his love of tinkering and fixing things, and his enjoyment of fishing, golfing, playing cards, watching sports, RV travel, and cooking—especially preparing the turkey, dressing, and gravy for family holidays.
Ted is survived by his sister Shirley Sushka, sister-in-law Libby Sushka, daughter Lori (Patrick) O’Maille, son Lou (Paula) Sushka, daughter Bobbi Tighe, and son Steven (Anne) Sushka, along with ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bob Sushka, and his wife of 55 years, Barbara.
