March 25, 1949— March 12, 2026
Smyrna, DE
Terry Lee Bentz, a devoted servant of God, skilled craftsman, and beloved father, passed away on March 12, 2026, in Smyrna, Delaware. Born on March 25, 1949, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, he spent his early years on a farm in Somerset before moving to Smyrna as a teenager. He graduated from Smyrna High School, where he met and later married his high school sweetheart, Helen Goldsborough. Together they built a life deeply rooted in the community he cherished.
Terry worked for many years with Lambertson Construction, earning a reputation as an accomplished mason and carpenter. His life took on new purpose after he became a born-again Christian. Answering God’s call to ministry, he pursued his studies at night at Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Elkton, Maryland, then moved his family to Greenville, South Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Theology from Tabernacle Baptist Bible College in 1989. Upon returning to Delaware, he served faithfully at Grace Baptist Church as a trustee for many years. Whether teaching Sunday School, preaching, or worshiping quietly in the pews, Terry’s devotion remained steadfast. Known for his sacrificial heart, he gave generously to others even when his own resources were limited, trusting always in God’s provision.
He also served in the Delaware U.S. Army National Guard and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in 1978. In quieter moments, Terry found joy in simple things. A gifted cook, he was especially known for his apple and elderberry pies and his handmade Christmas candies that he loved to share. He tended his vegetable garden with care and created beautiful pieces in his woodworking shop. Above all, he cherished the Lord, his family, old hymns, and the study of Scripture.
Terry is survived by his brothers, Jim Bentz, Jerry Bentz, and Tom Bentz; his children, Steven L. Bentz (Billie Jo), Heather Brennan (Dan), Daniel Bentz (Naomi), and Naomi Bentz (Sam); his grandchildren, Crystal Matsatsos, Hannah Roddy, Hunter Bentz, and Daniel Brennan; and his great-grandchildren, Jesse and James Roddy.
