Terrence James Gaughan

March 29, 1941 March 6, 2026

Delaware Water Gap, PA

Terrence J. Gaughan, 84, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 6, 2026, at Slate Belt Care and Rehabilitation Center in Bangor, Pennsylvania, with his loving wife of 55 years, Patricia (Pat), at his side. Born on March 29, 1941, in Hammond, Indiana, he was the third son of Carl and Iris (née Arthur) Gaughan. Terry grew up in the Hessville neighborhood, where his father worked in the offices of Inland Steel and his mother held a part-time position at a local drugstore.

A talented artist and designer, Terry graduated from Morton High School in Hessville before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Herron School of Art and Design in Indianapolis. He received the prestigious Wolcott Scholarship, which enabled him to travel and study art throughout Europe. He later pursued graduate studies in Graphic Design and Photography at Indiana University in Bloomington. Terry began his professional career as a graphic designer with Indiana University Publications, where he met his future wife, Pat. In 1970, the couple moved to New York City, marrying on St. Patrick’s Day in 1971 at the United Nations Chapel, a day Terry always described as the happiest of his life.

Terry enjoyed a distinguished 35-year career at McGraw-Hill, where he designed numerous books, including high-school textbooks and trade publications. Among his favorites was The Life and Times of Will Rogers. He later served as senior art director in McGraw-Hill’s Corporate Creative Services, producing high-quality materials for the company’s internal and external communications. In 2005, Terry and Pat retired to their longtime summer home in Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania, drawn by the area’s natural beauty and active arts community. There they became devoted volunteers with Celebration of the Arts, the Delaware Water Gap Chamber of Commerce, the Presbyterian Church of the Mountain, and Columcille Megalith Park.

Terry had a lifelong passion for anything powered by an engine, particularly Formula 1 and IndyCar racing. He also found joy in model railroading and was a founding member of the Delaware Water Gap Classic Car Club and the DWG Station Preservation Partnership, where he cherished the friendships he formed. He is survived by his wife, Pat; his brother, John Charles (Jack) Gaughan; nieces and nephews Liz Gaughan Brown, John C. Gaughan Jr., Shannon Kelly-Gaughan, and their families; his cousin Marcia Gaughan; and dear friends Marsha Wallace, Rex and Anna Lee Wilson, and Diane Brady. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Patrick, and his sister Pamela. At his request, there will be no services. Terry and Pat’s ashes will be interred near the St. Columba Chapel at Columcille Megalith Park.
