Newton, MA
Terrence John McSweeney of Newton passed away on March 9, 2026. Born in Boston on February 18, 1943, and raised in Somerville, Massachusetts, he was the son of Eileen and Thomas McSweeney of Belfast and Cork, respectively. Terry entered the world as a surprise, the second of twin boys. After the delivery of his brother Tom, the doctor exclaimed, “Oh, there’s another baby.” It was perhaps the only time in his life he was last to arrive. Throughout his life, Terry was known for his remarkable dependability, always arriving early to airports, appointments, work, and every commitment he made.
Before marrying and starting a family, Terry served proudly in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea, where he created lasting memories he enjoyed sharing. In 1968, he married Joan Doherty. For the next 57 years, they built a life together rooted in love, mutual respect, and cherished moments. They began their marriage in Winchester, Massachusetts, before settling in Newton, where they spent 56 years raising their two children, Michael and Lauren.
Terry found his greatest joy in his family. He considered his children and grandchildren his proudest achievements. Dependable, generous, and kind, he was a man of his word who would help without hesitation. His strong work ethic was matched by his love of travel, time spent with friends—especially his poker group that gathered monthly for more than 50 years—visits to the Cape and Maine, and cooking, particularly his beloved meatballs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eileen and Thomas McSweeney; his twin brother, Tom McSweeney; and his brother, Daniel McSweeney. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan McSweeney of Newton; his son, Michael McSweeney and his wife, Lynette, and their children, Michael, Patrick, and Addyson McSweeney of Waltham; and his daughter, Lauren McSweeney of Waltham. His steadiness, generosity, and quiet sense of responsibility left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
