Scranton, PA
Sylvia M. Reap, of the Weston Field section of North Scranton, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, at Marywood Heights after an extended illness. She and her husband, Edward, shared sixty-four years of marriage until his death in 2015.
Born in Scranton on February 26, 1930, Sylvia was the daughter of the late Jose Joaquim and Eliza Fontes Rodrigues. A proud graduate of Scranton Technical High School, class of 1948, she began her working life as a quiller operator in a local textile mill. She later became a beloved waitress at Abe’s Delicatessen for more than thirty years before enjoying a long tenure at the Green Ridge Club, from which she retired at the age of eighty-two.
Sylvia had a deep love for gardening and took great pride in the colorful, thriving flower beds that surrounded her home. She also found joy in cooking and crocheting, and she and Edward were devoted Penn State football fans who cherished their many trips to State College. Proud of her Portuguese heritage and fluent in the language, she remained deeply rooted in her Scranton community. Above all, she took the greatest pride in the academic and professional accomplishments of her children and grandchildren.
Sylvia was a lifelong Roman Catholic and a longtime member of St. Vincent de Paul parish in North Scranton, with a special affection for St. Peter’s Cathedral, where she often attended services with her son. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah M. Santini and her husband Frank of Archbald; her son, Brian J. Reap and his wife Lynne of Scranton; grandsons Christopher Santini of Washington, D.C., Kyle Reap and his wife Libby Marquardt Reap of Wayne, Pennsylvania, and granddaughter Cara Reap Raymond and her husband Charles of Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania; and great-grandchildren Charlie and Jake Raymond, and Brooks and Beau Reap. She also leaves sisters-in-law Irene Rodrigues of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and Dorothy Rodrigues of Newton, New Jersey, along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers Delmont, Anthony, and Daniel Rodrigues, her sister Cecelia Rodrigues Michalik, and their spouses.
