Mansfield, OH

Suzanne Cummins (Black) Davis passed away after a long struggle with dementia. Born on February 21, 1935, in Columbus, Ohio, to Otis and Portia (née Steele) Cummins, Suzie, as she was affectionately known, spent most of her life in Mansfield. She graduated from Northwestern University and returned to the community that shaped her, where she became a tireless advocate for local causes.

Suzie was deeply involved in numerous organizations, including the Rehab Center (now Catalyst), Community Health Action Project (CHAP), the Women’s Fund of the Richland County Foundation, Kingwood Center, Mansfield Art Center, and First Congregational Church. At a time when women were just beginning to assume leadership roles, she blazed a trail through her dedicated service. She was best known professionally as Director of Leadership Unlimited, where she introduced hundreds of participants to the strengths and positive qualities of Richland County. In 1994, she received the Athena Award in recognition of her outstanding community contributions.

Beyond her professional and volunteer work, Suzie raised a family with her first husband, Frank Black, and her second husband, Rees Davis. She is survived by her brother Otis “Koke” Cummins and his wife Cheryl; her sister Sara Cummins and companion Bernard Fuller; her daughter Libby Black and treasured friend Kelly McDevitt; her son Andy Black and wife Hope Mitnick, and their daughter Madina “Maddie” Black; and her daughter Katy Davis. She is also survived by cousin Karen Bierly and family, as well as many nieces, nephews, and their children. Her family is grateful for the devoted care provided by longtime friend and caregiver Cindy Niswander.

Suzie was predeceased by her parents, her beloved son Tom Black, and her husband Rees Davis. A memorial honoring her life will be held in the spring.
