Susan Smart

Susan “Sue” Smart, age 60, passed away on March 3, 2026 surrounded by her family in Duluth, Minnesota. Sue was born October 2, 1965 in Brainerd, Minnesota to Jim and Lorraine Walters.

A proud graduate of Brainerd High School, Sue devoted her career to helping others. For the past six years, she worked as a caregiver with Lutheran Social Service, where her kindness and caring nature touched the lives of many. Her work was a testament to her compassionate spirit and unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of those she helped.

Sue’s life was full of love, compassion and a zest for life. She had a passion for everything outdoors - gardening, fishing and overall enjoying the warm sunshine. She was also delighted by finding hidden treasures while thrifting with her family and friends. However, above all else, Sue’s greatest joy came from being surrounded by her family. She was a devoted grandmother, and cherished every moment she spent with her beloved grandchildren.

Sue is preceded in death by her husband and first love, Thomas Smart; parents, Jim and Lorraine Walters; and her beloved sister and best friend, Lorrie Walters. She is survived by her daughters, Ashley Moser (Jake) and Sarah Smart (Brian Plantz); her brother Mark Walters (Brandy Nickoll); her cherished grandchildren, Emma, Olivia, Xander, Axl, Evelyn and Matthew; and her loving companion, Keith Thiel.

Sue will be remembered for her spunkiness, her sense of humor, her kindness and the never-ending compassion she had for those in her life.

A celebration of life will be held in Sue’s honor on June 13, 2026 from 12 to 4 PM, at The Northland Arboretum located at 14250 Conservation Drive, Baxter, Minnesota.
