She was known for her vibrant personality, generous spirit, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Susan was the eldest of 18 children, which helped shape her caring and protective nature throughout her life.At an early age, Susan accepted Christ, and her faith remained a guiding force throughout her life.Susan attended Dunbar High School in Lubbock, Texas, where she proudly graduated and was an active member of the school band, playing the clarinet. She later continued her education at VTI (Video Technical Institute), reflecting her desire to continue learning and growing.Susan had a strong entrepreneurial spirit and loved staying active in her community. She enjoyed visiting flea markets, thrift stores, hosting yard sales, and discovering unique treasures. Susan had an eye for fashion and often received compliments on her attire. She was always eager to lend a helping hand, frequently volunteering at concession stands, art shows, and community events, as well as assisting at voting polls.As a civil rights advocate at heart, Susan believed strongly in standing up for others and uplifting her community. She was passionate about supporting youth and took pride in being a community activist who supported city parades and local gatherings.Known as the life of the party and a true social butterfly, Susan had a remarkable ability to bring people together. If there were a microphone in the building, she would have it in her hands before the event was over. Her laughter, kindness, and welcoming spirit made everyone feel like family. She will be remembered for her warmth, her strength, and the joy she brought into the lives of those around her.She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny Lee and Jimmie Lee Barnes; her brothers Johnathan Barnes and William Barnes; her sisters Linda K. Sawyer and Sonja D. Barnes Thomas; and her beloved daughter Tracey DeVon Jackson.Those left to cherish lasting memories include her children, Rachael Jordan (Chester) and Stacey Jackson; her beloved grandchildren, Mesha Pilgrim, Brandon Evans, and Kristale Jackson; her five great-granddaughters, who she affectionately referred to as her "Double G's", Saniah Pilgrim, Mckenzie Pilgrim, Bailee Evans, Alaia Marco, and Kynlee West; her brothers, Johnny Lee Barnes, Jr. (Marie), Levi Barnes (Robin), Michael Barnes (Tina), and Tython Barnes; her sisters, Phyllis Barnes, Elizabeth Pulley, Debra Barnes, Lola Barnes, and Darwanna Lebron Cruz (Alex); her nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends.
