Susan Balogh ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Brent Taylor Funeral Directors on Mar. 9, 2026.Susan Carol Balogh was born January 7, 1939 in Cloquet, MN to Victor and Sally Cheskie. She spoke fondly and frequently of her idyllic childhood in that small town and was very active in the community, church and school, but Sue craved knowledge and left Cloquet to follow her dreams of attending college, graduating from Wayne State University in Michigan in 1961. There she met her husband of 62 years, Kenneth Balogh, and together they started their family and careers.A lover of learning and lifelong educator, "Mrs. B" taught elementary and preschool students in Michigan, Virginia, and Pennsylvania before moving to Memphis where she taught 1st grade and served as a school administrator at The Auburndale School (now St. Benedict's at Auburndale). She was honored and proud to be one of three founding teachers at the Solomon Schecter School (now Bornblum Jewish Community School) in 1988 where she remained for over 20 years until her retirement. From drawing and coloring on the front porch of her childhood home, to learning watercolor from local Memphis artist, Fred Rawlinson, Sue had a passion for art, pursued many creative hobbies and supported the arts community. Her interest in music began early in the children's choir at church and continued throughout her life as an active participant in school choirs, church choirs and the local volunteer choral group, Wolf River Singers. An active member of Holy Apostles' Episcopal Church since 1972, Sue not only sang in the choir, but also coordinated the publication of multiple church cookbooks, taught Sunday School, helped start a day school, served on the vestry, and baked and taught others to bake communion bread.Sue is survived by her loving husband, Kenneth A. Balogh, her son Andrew (Sharon) Balogh of Germantown, TN, her daughter Sara-Lynne (Geoff) Bailey and granddaughter, Madison of Louisville, KY, her son Jason (Laurie, Tracy Yannelli) and grandchildren Audrey and Anders of Jackson, WY. She also leaves behind her sister Mary Sarkela of Superior, WI, her brother, Peter (Toni) Cheskie of Oshkosh, WI and multiple nieces and nephews.A visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Sunday, March 22, 2026, beginning at 11:30AM until the memorial service at 1:00PM, all to be held at Church of the Holy Apostles in Collierville, TN. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Church of the Holy Apostles Music Memorial Fund (https://secure.myvanco.com/YH54/campaign/C-ZB9X) or Bornblum Jewish Community School (https://bornblum.crowdchange.co/20122/donate)To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
