SUSAN BETH MCGRATH

Susan Beth McGrath, née Hilton, passed away on March 12, 2026, in Newton at the age of 84. Born in Utah and raised in Michigan, Susan earned a B.Ed. from the University of Michigan and a Master of Science in Chemistry from Syracuse University. A devoted Catholic, she married Joseph McGrath in Ann Arbor in 1967. Together they raised three daughters while Susan taught high school chemistry.

In retirement in Massachusetts, Susan discovered a talent for painting and developed a deep love for all Boston sports teams. She was preceded in death by her parents, Helen (née Higgenbotham) and Leo Hilton, and by her siblings, Gregory Hilton (Suzette) and Cynthia Hildenbrand.

Susan is survived by her husband, Joe; her daughter, Dr. Claire McGrath (Gary Phillips) and grandchildren Jackson and Samuel; her daughter, Dr. Meghan McGrath (Dr. R. Christopher Sheldrick) and grandchildren Caleb and Peter; and her daughter, Hon. Tara McGrath (Col. Douglas Hatch, USMC Ret.) and grandchildren Liam, Helen, and Millie Claire.
