Susan Ann Smolin

d. 2026

The Woodlands, TX

Susan Ann Smolin, formerly of Needham, Massachusetts and most recently of The Woodlands, Texas, passed away on March 12, 2026, at the age of 82.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Alvin and Marjorie Smolin, Susan spent her early years in New York, New Jersey, and Maine before settling in Needham. There she married Martin Gombosi and created a life centered on family, learning, and community. A lifelong student, she earned a BA from Columbia University after studying at St. John’s College and later received an MBA from Boston University. Her intellectual curiosity and love of learning remained constants throughout her life.

Above all, Susan found her greatest joy in motherhood. She devoted herself completely to raising her son, David, and took deep pride in the man he became. She was known for her generous and thoughtful nature, always ready to offer help, encouragement, or a kind word. Friendly and outgoing, she enjoyed meeting new people and engaging in meaningful conversation. She was an active member of Toastmasters International, volunteered with the Needham Scouting troop, and formed many lasting friendships through her involvement in the Sisterhood at Temple Aliyah in Needham.

Susan’s interests were many and enriching. She was an avid reader, studied languages, loved classical and international music, traveled widely, cared for animals, and stayed active through regular exercise. She remained closely connected to her Jewish faith and supported several charitable causes dear to her heart. In recent years she lived in The Woodlands, Texas, near her family. She is survived by her son, David Gombosi, and his wife, Heather, and her sisters, Stephanie and Martine. She will be remembered for her intelligence, curiosity, warmth, generosity, and kindness.
