Steven J. Smith, age 76, of North Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away on March 14, 2026, with his wife and brother at his side. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, on July 8, 1949, to James B. Smith and Virginia Kirkland Smith, he was preceded in death by his parents.
Steven was a gifted artist—a painter, sketcher, and wordsmith—whose creative spirit touched everyone around him. A Vietnam War veteran who served in the United States Army, he later worked as a Letter Carrier for the US Postal Service for thirty years, earning the affection of his patrons. He was a devoted rescuer and loyal friend to animals, a comforting presence for those who felt lost, a playful companion, and a patient mentor to the curious. Above all, he was deeply cherished by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Smith, with whom he shared forty loving years as devoted soul mates and twin flames. He also leaves behind his brother, Russell Smith, as well as Richard Hendricks, Alex Smith, Gabriel Smith, Agnes Lobo, Stephanie Purvis, Shara Purtle, Jonathan Purvis, and many other loved ones.
In his final poem to Steven, Evelyn wrote of following him through color and light, ending with the words they lived by: “We travel as one.”
