Steven Gutierrez

Steven Gutierrez, 38, of Portales, passed away in March 2026. Born on September 10, 1987, in Portales, he attended special education classes in the Portales public schools and graduated from Portales High School. Despite multiple disabilities, Steven understood a great deal of the world around him. He found simple, consistent joys in life—watching television, particularly westerns, listening to Spanish music, riding in the car, and sitting outside to enjoy nature. He especially loved McDonald’s and Burger King hamburgers, and if given a maraca, he would shake it for as long as it remained in his hand.

Steven is survived by his mother, Maria Cabezuela of Portales; four brothers, Ben Munoz, Jr. and his wife Maria E. of Portales, Santiago Munoz and his wife Laura of Clovis, Tony Munoz and his companion Shawna McNeal of Portales, and Jessie Cabezuela and his companion Petra Ponce of Portales; and four sisters, Diana Sigala and her husband Jesus, Joanna Villages and her husband Reydsel, Maryann Munoz, and Geneva Nevarez and her husband Encarnacio, all of Portales. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who will remember him with affection.
