Amarillo, TX
Stephen Torres, 48, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2026.
Born on March 24, 1977, in Amarillo to Manuel Torres, Jr. and Maria del Carmen (Rodriguez) Torres, Stephen was baptized, received Reconciliation and First Communion at St. Laurence Catholic Church, and later received Confirmation and Anointing of the Sick at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He graduated from Caprock High School, where he played football and served as a Lance Corporal in the JROTC program. As a boy he was active in Boy Scouts, enjoying camping and the outdoors.
After high school, Stephen attended Amarillo College and earned a welding certificate. He went on to work for the City of Amarillo in the Street and Drainage Utility Departments, where he also obtained his commercial driver’s license. Known for his big laugh, generous heart, and sincere care for others, he made everyone around him feel welcome and included. A hard worker who valued teamwork, Stephen was regarded as dependable and proud of every job he undertook.
A two-time cancer survivor, he faced every challenge with strength and deep faith. He remained active in his faith community at Grace Church and the Amarillo Cancer Survivor Group. Stephen also expressed a creative spirit through painting and art, earning second- and third-place honors at the Tri-State Fair. A proud Texas Longhorn fan, he loved good food—especially seafood—his mother’s cooking, family gatherings, telling corny jokes, dancing, and bringing laughter to those around him.
Above all, family was at the center of Stephen’s life. As a loving son and brother, he cherished strong bonds, celebrated every milestone, and stood ready to support and protect those he loved. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Thomasa and Abel Rodriguez, Manuel Torres Sr., and Venancia Nieto; his aunt and uncle Luis and Aurora Torres; his uncles Cleo Torres, Abel Rodriguez, and Joe Rodriguez; his aunt Gloria Torres-Hunter; and several beloved cousins and extended family members. He is survived by his parents, Manuel and Carmen Torres; his brother and sister-in-law, Marcos and Ann-Marie Torres; his sister and brother-in-law, Eric and Elizabeth (Libby) Pacheco; his sister, Vivian Torres; his niece, Rachel Torres; his nephew, Ethan Torres; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends.
