Stephen M. Cluett

May 12, 1964 March 9, 2026

Gloucester, MA

Stephen M. Cluett, a retired United States Merchant Marine Captain, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026, at the age of 61. Born and raised in Gloucester, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Stephen O. and Kathryn (Iggie) Cluett. He spent his childhood on Rocky Neck before attending Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts, and Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute. After his schooling, he returned briefly to Gloucester before making Rhode Island his home for more than thirty years.

Stephen’s lifelong passion for the sea carried him around the world in a variety of maritime roles, from handling customs paperwork on shore to working aboard offshore tugboats. He spent more than two decades with Don Jon Marine. When he was not at sea, he ran his own construction company, Bay View Builders, specializing in decks and window replacement. He will be remembered for his quick wit and dry sense of humor, his deep love of dogs, sunshine, neck scratches, building model tugboats, and his enduring enthusiasm for hockey. A longtime season ticket holder for the Providence Bruins, he followed the team through the years and took great joy in watching both the women’s and men’s Team USA squads win gold in recent competition.

He is survived by his sister, Mary-Kathryn (Cluett) Gray and her husband Jeff, his nephew Jeff Cluett, dear family friend J. Mark Olsen, and his beloved dogs Bean, Angel, and LillyBelle, along with many former shipmates and friends from across the globe.
