Stephen B. Hughey

Stephen Burr “Steve” Hughey, age 77, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 4, 2026, in Daytona Beach, Florida. Born to the late Alonzo and Hilda (Edsall) Hughey in Montour Falls, New York, he graduated from Corning East High School, attended art school in New York, and served in the United States Air Force.

Steve built a successful business in the sign trade after mastering hand lettering. In his free time he restored antique automobiles and built and remodeled houses. A gifted artist, he explored nearly every form of visual art, including painting, drawing, ceramics, stained glass, neon, sculpture, photography, and textile work.

Those who knew him remember Steve as a fun-loving free spirit who lived life fully. A natural jokester and creative soul, he made friends easily, shared his love openly, and quietly helped many through difficult times.

He is survived by his three daughters, Clover Ryan, Melonie Caldwell, and Hiedi Kuenzli; his brother, Monte Hughey; a granddaughter, Livia Holland Kuenzli; two nieces, Doreen Robie and Stacie Kilburn Rooney; and a nephew, Gregory Hughey. Steve was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Andra (Hughey) Hackett.
