Charles B. Shelton, Jr., SSGT (USAF Retired), 94, of Durham, North Carolina, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2026. Born in Athens, Tennessee, to the late Charles B. Shelton, Sr. and Bessie Edmonson Shelton, he lived a life defined by quiet strength, service, and generosity.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Staff Sergeant after more than twenty years of dedicated duty. He then worked at Rhodes Furniture for over twenty years, retiring as Warehouse Manager. A longtime member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church for more than thirty years, Charles served as a Deacon and was known for his skilled carpentry. He generously gave his time and talent to church members, building decks, ramps, and anything else they needed.

Charles enjoyed bluegrass and gospel music, took great pride in tending his yard and vegetable garden, and was always ready to help others. He never turned down a person in need.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Shelton; son, Terry Lee Shelton; and brothers, Mack Shelton and Fred Shelton. Mr. Shelton is survived by his sons, Gary Shelton and Kelly Shelton; daughter, Shelley Collins; sisters, Zell Forrester and Elva Hahnert; grandchildren, Michael Collins, Chris Collins, and Scott Whelan; great-grandchildren, Austin Whelan, Isabella Diaz, Liam Collins, and Jack Christopher Collins; and many other loving family members and friends.
