Fred “Spencer” Shirley, 90, of Anderson, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on March 7, 2026. Born on November 23, 1935, in Anderson, he was the son of the late Fred Armstrong Shirley and the late Jeanette McLees Shirley. Spencer served for ten years in the Army National Guard and was known as a generous, hard-working man who was always ready to help family and friends. For more than fifty years, he owned and operated Shirley Auto Glass & Trim on West Market Street.
A lifelong member of Central Presbyterian Church, Spencer sang in the choir each Sunday and could often be found in the church kitchen preparing pancakes for the congregation following the Easter Sunrise Service. His chicken salad and deviled eggs were beloved by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Judith Knobel Shirley; his daughter, Pamela Shirley Hilburn (Don); his daughter-in-law, Rachelle Propp Shirley; and his granddaughters, Judith Marie Shirley and Anna Catherine Carron. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Richard Alan Shirley, former Mayor of Anderson and Clerk of Court for Anderson County; his sister, Patricia Ann Shirley of Atlanta, Georgia; and his son-in-law, Michael Andrew Carron of Jefferson, Georgia.
