Sophia Afet Shields

Sophia Afet Shields, known affectionately as Afet by her friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026, in Freeport, Florida. Born on April 23, 1943, in the historic coastal city of Izmir, Turkey, Afet lived a vibrant and spirited life that reflected the warmth of her birthplace. Her radiant smile and generous heart touched everyone she encountered, and she embodied a deep capacity for love and a commitment to living life fully.

She shared a tender and enduring marriage with her husband, Richard Shields, a career member of the United States Army, whom she supported with steadfast devotion. Richard preceded her in death on May 8, 2011. Together they embraced the world as true citizens of it, living for a decade in Saudi Arabia and traveling extensively. Their shared adventures broadened Afet’s perspective and deepened her appreciation for diverse cultures, which she welcomed with openness and grace. In 1997, they settled in Northwest Florida, where they found a welcoming community that became their extended family.

Afet leaves behind a legacy of kindness, adventure, and love that will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. Her spirit remains alive in the cherished memories she created and in the hearts of all who loved her.
