Sonya Kay "Nonnie" Barnett

1936 — 2026

Port Arthur, TX

Sonya Kay “Nonnie” Barnett, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, dedicated educator, and faithful member of First Christian Church in Port Arthur, passed away on March 12, 2026, in Beaumont, Texas. Born on July 19, 1936, in Pampa, Texas, she lived a life of 89 years marked by deep devotion to family, faith, and teaching.

Sonya taught mathematics for many years in the Port Neches-Groves Independent School District, where she touched the lives of countless students. She also proudly sponsored the PNG High School cheerleaders, offering the same warmth, mentorship, and encouragement she gave her own family. Her greatest joy came from her church, where she served in many leadership roles and found strength and purpose in her unwavering faith.

Affectionately known as Nonnie, she was a steadfast presence in the lives of her loved ones. She cherished watching her family grow, delighting in the laughter of her youngest great-grandchildren in her toy room and on the swings outside her home. She faithfully attended their games and dance recitals, always cheering them on and gently reminding them that their strength came from above.

She was married for 53 years to her beloved husband, Mike Barnett, Sr., who preceded her in death. Sonya was the daughter of the late Chesta Carl Franks and Amanda Myatt Franks. She is survived by her sons, Mike Barnett, Jr. and his wife Tracy of Port Neches, and Lance Barnett and his wife Alicia of Groves; her grandchildren, Staci Gary and husband Jared, Drew Barnett, and Kelsey LaCour and husband Tyler; and her great-grandchildren, Lawsen Gary, Leyton Gary, Loren Gary, Landrie Gary, Brayden Bromonsky, Shep LaCour, and Sutton LaCour. She was also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Franks. She was reunited in death with her husband, her parents, and her grandson, Michael “Trey” Barnett, III.
