Sister Mary Margaret Kerr
March 3, 1934— March 6, 2026
Chardon, OH
Sister Mary Margaret Kerr, SND, formerly known as Sister Mary St. Maurus, passed away on March 3, 2026. Born on March 3, 1934, in Cleveland, she was the youngest of six children born to Maurice and Edith (Ford) Kerr. Raised in Cleveland Heights in St. Ann Parish, Margaret and her siblings attended school and received the sacraments there. Playful and energetic from a young age, she delighted in learning and embraced every sport. While a student at Notre Dame Academy in Cleveland, she decided to enter religious life as an aspirant and became a postulant on February 2, 1952. At investment, she received the name Sister Mary St. Maurus and professed her vows on August 16, 1954.
Sister Mary Margaret earned a bachelor’s degree from St. John College in Cleveland and a master’s degree from John Carroll University. She began her ministry teaching primary grades but soon discovered her true calling in the junior high classroom. She served in parish schools in the dioceses of Cleveland, Youngstown, and Arlington, Virginia, where she was best remembered as an eighth-grade math teacher and an innovative computer instructor who skillfully met the needs of students of all ages.
After more than twenty years at St. Agnes School and Parish in Arlington, Sister Margaret returned to Chardon, where she worked with students in the Notre Dame Skills Lab and at the hospitality desk at Hillcrest Hospital. She carried a spirit of joy and welcoming wherever she went. Throughout her life, she remained deeply close to her large and loving family, and visits with them were cherished events remembered with great fondness. Sister Margaret lived her faith and her love for God with the full energy of her whole self.
