Sister Elizabeth (Betty) Gaynor

Sister Elizabeth (Betty) Gaynor

Dallas, PA

Sister Elizabeth (Betty) Gaynor, RSM, a cherished member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, died peacefully on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at The Meadows Skilled Nursing Center in Dallas. Born in Philadelphia to Elizabeth Sweeney and James Gaynor, she entered the Sisters of Christian Charity in 1954 and professed her perpetual vows in 1963. In 1980, she transferred to the Sisters of Mercy, Diocese of Scranton, and devoted 72 years of her life to God and service to the people of the Church.

A graduate of College Misericordia with a degree in elementary education, Sister Betty found deep joy in teaching younger grades in the dioceses of Scranton and Trenton, New Jersey. Her students delighted her every day, and she was beloved for her easy laugh, constant smile, and lighthearted spirit that often led to wonderfully spontaneous dancing. She remained a dedicated and passionate teacher until 2016, when she transitioned to volunteer ministry at Mercy Center, where she brought the same warmth and energy to the elderly she served.

Throughout her years of service, Sister Betty remained especially close to her family. She cherished every opportunity to spend time with them and, in her later years, loved sharing stories about her loved ones. She was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth and James, her sister Anne (Gaynor) Boyd, and her brothers Andrew, John, and Jim Gaynor. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, family friends, and many dear friends among the Sisters of Mercy and Mercy Associates.
