July 28, 1940— March 9, 2026
Louisville, KY
Shirley Smith-Pointer, affectionately known as Shirley Finey, Aunt CeCe, and Aunt Shirley, passed away on March 9, 2026. Born on July 28, 1940, in Louisville, she was the first child of Emile “Papa Smitty” and Galilee “Mama Bee” Smith. A graduate of Central High School class of 1958, she went on to attend the University of Louisville.
Deeply devoted to her faith, Shirley professed her love for Jesus Christ at Young’s Chapel A.M.E. Church, where she served faithfully for many years as a Sunday School teacher, finance committee member, church secretary, steward, and usher. She also represented her church as a delegate at conferences.
Shirley was the proud mother of one daughter, Sherri’ Antoinette Pointer. The two shared an exceptionally close bond, whether attending church together, enjoying meals at Cheddar’s, keeping hair appointments, visiting doctors, or shopping at every mall in the city. They were also passionate supporters of the arts and frequently attended plays together.
After more than thirty years of service with the U.S. Social Security Administration, where she utilized her skills in typing and stenography, Shirley retired and continued her commitment to community service through the National Council of Negro Women, at one time serving as local president.
She now joins her parents and her younger brother Norman “Meatie” Smith. Shirley is survived by her loving daughter, Sherri’; her caring siblings, Nolan A. Smith (JoDale) and Vickie Mahin; and a host of nephews, nieces, and other cherished family members and friends.
