Morris, IL

Sheryll Ann Wettering, 83, of Morris, Illinois, passed away on March 7, 2026, at Morris Hospital surrounded by her loving husband, children, and grandchildren.

Born on August 29, 1942, in Ottawa, Illinois, to Eileen and William Hicks, Sherry grew up in the “flats” along the Fox River, where five generations of her family lived in a close-knit neighborhood that included her grandparents Ernest and Etta Smithson and great-grandparents Frank and Mattie Roberts. She graduated from Ottawa High School with the Class of 1960.

In 1975, a playful moment at Bud’s Tap led her to meet Robert L. Wettering, who became her date to a friend’s wedding. They married three years later and shared 47 years of marriage. Together they owned The Cabaret Restaurant and the Runway Cafe in Morris during the 1990s, where Sherry’s legendary work ethic and passion for serving excellent food earned her lifelong friendships with customers and employees alike. She was an avid bowler, two-time City of Morris Ladies Bowling Champion in 1972 and 1973, and a devoted player in multiple leagues. Sherry also loved crossword puzzles, Scrabble, Jeopardy, and monthly gatherings with high school classmates and friends for Bunco and “couple’s night” dinners.

She is survived by her husband Robert L. Wettering, children Jeffery (Anna) Poundstone, Stacy (Patrick) Sanders, and Teri (Jeffrey) Shaw, and many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Rielly (Brock) Johnson, Summer (Emily Chapman) Shaw, Emily (Steven) Magnafici, Matthew Poundstone, Samuel Poundstone, Conner Shaw, Sophia Shaw, and Levi Magnafici, as well as step-grandchildren and their children. She took special delight in thoughtfully selecting and wrapping gifts for them each year. She was preceded in death by her parents and younger brother William E. Hicks.
