Sheila Johnson

Sheila Margaret Johnson, née Hyland, 75, of Webster City, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. Born on June 22, 1950, in Laurens, Iowa, to Mylo and Margaret Hyland, Sheila grew up in Dana, Fonda, and finally Zearing. She graduated from NESCO High School in 1968 and from Iowa State University in 1972. In Zearing on June 9, 1973, she married her high school sweetheart, Douglas Johnson. After teaching elementary school for five years, Sheila chose to stay home to raise their three children, Erin, Devin, and Michael, in Randall, Iowa. The family later lived in the Kansas City area before returning to Iowa and settling in Webster City in 1989. There, Sheila worked at First State Bank for more than 25 years in insurance, marketing, and as Prestige Club coordinator until her retirement. She deeply valued the relationships she formed with colleagues and club members.

Sheila’s greatest joys were her husband Doug, her children, and her grandchildren. An avid reader, she also loved traveling, quilting, scrapbooking, and solving crossword puzzles. She explored Iowa, the United States, and destinations around the world on trips with family and the Prestige Club, carefully preserving memories in detailed scrapbooks filled with photographs, maps, and stories.

A dedicated member of the Webster City community, Sheila volunteered through St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with the LWML, Christians in Action, the Food Pantry, and other groups. She also gave her time to the American Legion Auxiliary, the Hamilton County Hospital gift shop, and read to children at Webster City’s elementary schools to share her love of books. For more than 25 years she supported Army Reservists through the Family Readiness Group, earning several honors for her leadership, including the Department of the Army’s Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from the 75th Reserve Division.

Sheila is survived by her husband of 53 years, Doug; her children, Erin Johnson Klitgaard, Devin Johnson, and Michael (Sun) Johnson; her grandchildren, Cate, Ben, Maggie, and Cece Klitgaard, and Sofia and River Johnson; her brothers, Steve, Tim, Dennis (Juli), and Chris (Lisa) Hyland; and her sisters, Nancy Reis, Maureen (Gordon) Carver, Diane (Steve) Jones, and Lisa (Bruce) Smallwood. Her family extends heartfelt thanks to all the medical providers who cared for her over the years.
