Crystal Lake, IL
Sharon Ruth Myers, born Sharon Ruth Stene on October 23, 1946, in Elgin, Illinois, passed away on March 7, 2026, in Crystal Lake, Illinois, after a long period of health challenges. The daughter of Arvin and Erna (Loechelt) Stene, she graduated from Larkin High School in 1964 as a member of its first graduating class, followed by Ellis Business College in 1965. She worked at Kemper Insurance in Chicago until her marriage to Howard Wm. Myers in 1966 at Zion Lutheran Church in Elgin.
Sharon and Howard lived in Rolla, Missouri, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and North Attleboro, Massachusetts, before making their home in Crystal Lake in 1973. She built a notable career in culinary arts, writing and publishing a cooking newsletter for more than 16 years that earned recognition from the James Beard Foundation. She catered hundreds of events, from intimate holiday parties to large weddings and banquets. In addition, she served as office manager for her husband’s consulting business and later for her son’s company, Acorn Landscape. Above all, she was the heart of the Myers family, known for preparing a home-cooked meal and fresh baked goods for them every night.
Sharon had a special love for Christmas and made every holiday and birthday a memorable celebration for her loved ones. She was a devoted wife and best friend to Howard for more than 51 years, as well as a loving mother, grandmother, and sister.
She is survived by her sons, Howard Arvin “Arvy” (Kimberley) Myers of Alexandria, Virginia, and Andrew Carter (Jenny) Myers of Crystal Lake; grandchildren Lillian Helen and Oakly Carter Myers of Crystal Lake; and her brother, Dennis Carter (Carol) Stene of Elgin. She was preceded in death by her husband Howard in 2017.
