Selma Coty ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by McKoon Funeral Home & Crematory on Mar. 6, 2026.Selma Pitts Coty, 89, of Grantville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2026, in Amelia Island, Florida.Born on August 31, 1936, Selma grew up on a farm in Carroll County, Georgia. A Grantville resident since 1980, she maintained a deep connection to the community for decades. Selma attended Georgia State University and Clayton State University and later retired from Georgia Power Company. In the mid-1990s, she created Penny Acres on her wooded property, as a furnished rental for travelers and corporate guests.Selma devoted much of her life to service in Grantville. She served on the Grantville City Council and also as Interim Mayor. Her civic work included service with Newnan-Coweta County tourism efforts, the Grantville Public Library Board, the Regional Library Board, Grantville Keep America Beautiful, the Grantville Garden Club, and other beautification and community initiatives. She was recognized by the City of Grantville and the Grantville Public Library Board for her leadership and dedication to the Children's Library "Rain Forest" project.In more recent years, Selma continued her public service through preservation and cemetery work, including service as chair of the Grantville Historic Preservation Commission and participation in the Grantville Cemetery Trust. She believed in lifelong learning and in giving back to the community she loved.Selma will be remembered for staying true to the things she believed in and for her loyalty to friends and family. She had remarkable perseverance, a lively wit, and dearly loved her dogs, who brought her great companionship and joy.She was preceded in death by her parents, Olin Gay Pitts and Clara Whitehead Pitts. She is survived by her cousins, Mary Palmer (Gary), Susan Warren, and Margaret Quinton (Darryl); Melissa Palmer Marinaccio and her godson, Bryan Palmer; Camren Gober, Redding Gober, Leah Schottenfeld, Georgia Smith, Moranel Gober, and Guy Ross Gober; and a host of cousins and close friends.Visitation will be held Thursday, March 12, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at McKoon Funeral Home, 38 Jackson Street, Newnan, Georgia. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with Rev. Winston Skinner officiating.
