Selma Pitts Coty, 89, of Grantville, Georgia, passed away on March 4, 2026, in Amelia Island, Florida. Born on August 31, 1936, she grew up on a farm in Carroll County, Georgia, and had lived in Grantville since 1980. She attended Georgia State University and Clayton State University before retiring from Georgia Power Company. In the mid-1990s, she created Penny Acres on her wooded property, offering a furnished rental for travelers and corporate guests.
Selma devoted much of her life to serving the Grantville community. She served on the Grantville City Council and as Interim Mayor, and contributed to Newnan-Coweta County tourism efforts, the Grantville Public Library Board, the Regional Library Board, Grantville Keep America Beautiful, the Grantville Garden Club, and numerous beautification initiatives. She was recognized by the City of Grantville and the Grantville Public Library Board for her leadership in the Children’s Library “Rain Forest” project. In later years, she continued her public service through historic preservation and cemetery work as chair of the Grantville Historic Preservation Commission and as a participant in the Grantville Cemetery Trust. She believed deeply in lifelong learning and in giving back to the community she loved.
Selma will be remembered for her steadfastness to the things she believed in, her loyalty to friends and family, her remarkable perseverance, and her lively wit. She dearly loved her dogs, who brought her great companionship and joy throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Olin Gay Pitts and Clara Whitehead Pitts. She is survived by her cousins, Mary Palmer (Gary), Susan Warren, and Margaret Quinton (Darryl); Melissa Palmer Marinaccio and her godson, Bryan Palmer; Camren Gober, Redding Gober, Leah Schottenfeld, Georgia Smith, Moranel Gober, and Guy Ross Gober; and a host of other cousins and close friends.
