October 20, 1945 March 14, 2026

Marianna, FL

Saundra Lee Applewhite, a cherished matriarch of unwavering faith, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026, in Marianna, Florida. Born on October 20, 1945, in Chattahoochee, Florida, she was the daughter of Troy Lee Tyus, Sr. and Vergelina McLane Tyus. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Troy “Chuck” Tyus, Jr., her sister Dianne Tyus Berry, and her brother-in-law Spud Berry.

A proud 1963 graduate of Grand Ridge High School, Saundra dedicated more than thirty years of service to the Florida State Hospital before continuing her caregiving career at the Marianna Convalescent Center. Her deep Christian faith guided every aspect of her life, shaping her selfless spirit and quiet strength. She found great joy in cooking for her family, creating warm holiday gatherings, fishing when she was able, reading, and spoiling her grandchildren. Known for her candid opinions, hearty laughter, and colorful expressions, she served as the steady heart of her family, offering wisdom and love in equal measure.

Saundra is survived by her sons, Chris Applewhite (Kim) and Kevin Applewhite (Amanda); granddaughters Stevie Applewhite and Morgan Gainer; grandsons Cole Applewhite and Turner Gainer; and great-grandsons KP Garrett and Nate Applewhite. She is also survived by her brother Ted Tyus (Charlotte), her special uncle Ronnie Carpenter, nieces DeAnne Berry, Leigh Chambers, Starla Chance, Cissy Bair, and Charly Hermann, great-nieces Alli-Anne, Harper, Will, Gabe, Amelia, Brett, Ty, Karis, Katie, Joy, and Mary Charlotte, and great-nephew Hurston, along with many dear friends who were touched by her generous heart.

Her family will always remember her favorite sayings—“You ain’t Lyin’,” “And all of the above,” “This is True,” “Happier than a dead pig in the sunshine,” “The good Lord don’t like ugly,” and others—that captured her wit and wisdom. Saundra’s legacy of faith, devotion, and quiet resilience will continue to guide and inspire those she leaves behind.
