Preserve forever →Samuel Augustus Young, Jr.
May 28, 1947— February 26, 2026
Suffern, NY
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Samuel Augustus Young, Jr., a beloved father, brother, teacher, master official, and friend. He was born on May 28th, 1947, in Brooklyn, NY, and passed away on February 26th, 2026, in Suffern, NY, at age 78. To many, he was known as "Gus," and his chapter on Earth may have come to an end, but his story lives on in those who loved him.
Gus is survived by his daughter, Susannah Young-Maiarana; son-in-law, Joseph Maiarana; ex- wife, Deborah Dennis-Young; sister, Dr. E. Beverly Young; several cousins and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel A. Young, Sr., and mother, Edith W. (McRae) Young.
Gus graduated from Widener University in 1970 with a degree in French and education. He later earned a Master of Science degree in Applied Public Affairs from the University of Buffalo in 1979, and a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Education Administration from SUNY Brockport in 1990. His love for education prospered as Gus worked in various school districts from 1978 to 2000, completing his professional journey as an education supervisor at Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center from 2004 to 2013 before retiring.
Gus’s talents were copious, as he dedicated over 15 years as an official for the PSAL Football Officials Association and 35+ years as a USA Track & Field Master Official. As a religious man, Gus spent many years singing in his church's choir, including going on tour, and as a prior board member. His community was extremely important to him, and he volunteered at his local soup kitchen weekly for the past few decades.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 21st, 2026, from 10am to 11am at Hooper Memorial Home, Inc., located in Harrisburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation or the Education Through Music organization located in New York, NY.
Gus was an extraordinary man who shined brighter than he ever knew. His legacy will continue on through those who will forever remember his laughter, love for the arts, dedication to sports, and all of his passions in life.
